Hyrule Warriors: Impressions Playing As Princess Zelda

She ain’t no damsel in this game! Princess Zelda shows off her many moves as a princess-warrior.

GameXplain has shared their impressions on Hyrule Warriors straight out of E3. To be specific, they share what it’s like to be playing as Princess Zelda.

You will want to keep in your head that this is more a Dynasty Warriors game with a Legend of Zelda theme than a Zelda game. Many of the conventions in the Warriors games were reused here, so gamers familiar with them can easily get into this one.

Much like the Dynasty Warriors games, you move with the left analog stick. There is a normal attack (Y button) and a charge attack (X attack). You can use certain combinations of these buttons to execute combos, but you can also hold X to charge Zelda’s magic. A button is used to dash quickly. To lock onto enemies, you can press the left trigger or press down on the right analog stick. To switch targets, you move the right analog stick left or right.

As expected of Tecmo Koei, the game is very flashy in presentation. Zelda uses a variety of weapons that she has been shown to be familiar in in various games, including the sword and the bow. Her moves seem to have some decent range, her sword attacks in particular have some homing qualities, and many of her more powerful attacks have her leaping to unleash enchanted arrows or magic.

 You don’t have to select between either weapon or magic. They come out based on context, AKA, what combination of X and Y buttons you press, and/or how long you charge and release X attacks. Once your magic bar is completely filled out, you can release an extra powerful attack by pressing A. Zelda stops and releases one especially powerful arrow that takes out multiple enemies all at once.

The game also has an element called Weak Point Smash. If you find your enemy’s weak point and attack it, you will take more of its life and defeat it faster and more easily. In fact, this is needed in many points to take out bosses within time limits. Once you get the bombs, you throw them out using ZR.
