Ubisoft is rumored to be working on two distinct Assassin’s Creed titles for the coming year.
Eurogamer first took note of comments from Ubisoft’s Momchil Valentinov Gindyanov that working on multiple Assassin’s Creed titles was definitely a possibility.
Double checking with their sources, they believe that there are two titles in development. One is being developed for the Playsation 3 and Xbox 360, while another is being made exclusive for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One. Eurogamer has nothing to say about the PS3/360 games coming to the newer platforms, or of any games coming to PC or Wii U (And for that matter, 3DS or Vita). To be clear, this is the only information they have, and even then, it’s still in rumorsville.
They also claim that the series is going through a massive rescope, which could be a good or bad thing, depending on what it actually means. Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag did not sell as well as hoped during launch, 60 % lower than its predecessor. Ubisoft attributed this to the pending release of next gen consoles, but truthfully, the game has fared little better on those newer consoles, and now the company faces other issues in connection with many reports of PC players suffering from a faulty experience, and more recently, problems running the Freedom Cry DLC.
If that rescope and split into more games means more rational game budgets and scaled down ambitions, great. Ubisoft and their fans may be better served lowering expectations in terms of sales to make pending Assassin’s Creed releases better designed and more stable. In my opinion, this would make the franchise more viable in the long term.
