We’re at an exciting point in the video game industry. There is a move towards the next-generation platforms from both Microsoft and Sony. With both companies slated to release their upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X this holiday season, it would be interesting to see just how many developers will start out developing titles for the upcoming platforms exclusively. We know that when it comes to Square Enix, they will be taking their time before making the decision to only support the upcoming platforms.
There is a ton of adopters that have either the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 platform and just like with any new console release, it will likely take some time before most end up switching onto the latest platform. Despite this, development studios are already working on video game titles that would see a launch for the upcoming platforms, but don’t expect too many to start turning out games that would only be available for the upcoming PS5 and XSX.
We’ll see plenty of new titles release that will have a port for current and next-generation platforms. In fact, Microsoft unveiled a feature known as Smart Delivery which would allow the developers to craft a game that could recognize if it’s being played on the Xbox One or Xbox Series X which would ultimately prevent the need to purchase a game twice.
Recently, Square Enix’s president and representative director Yosuke Matsuda answered some questions during their financial results call. One of the questions was based on support for new games in which Yosuke Matsuda was able to confirm that there would be support for current-generation platforms when it comes to new games, at least for the foreseeable future.
