Avalanche on Microtransactions: ‘Greed Never Works’

November 27, 2013 by Stephen Daly

‘We’ll never compromise on quality or sell our souls for a quick buck’, says Just Cause developer.

Avalanche co-founder Christofer Sundberg has commented on the practice of game subscriptions and microtransactions saying, "greed never works".

While he has stressed that "Micro-Transactions, subscriptions and other biz models will be the next generation of games. It is that simple" the Just Cause developer believes that the at studio:

"We'll never compromise on quality or sell our souls for a quick buck. Things are changing and we need to adapt. There will be some really bad examples [of microtransactions] for sure and some really good ones. I don't have a perfect solution… yet."

He added that he agrees "100%" that microtransactions in $60 games should not be implemented in such a way that prevents players who don't buy them from completing the game smoothly.

Avalanche has previously released free-to-play game The Hunter which requires microtransactions if players want to pursue more than one type of animal and is currently developing the single player only Mad Max for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Sundberg has previously spoken out against "terrible" DRM systems.
