Rockstar Claims They Will Fix GTA Online Economy, But Can’t Remove Mega Exploit Money

October 24, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Surprise email response from Rockstar contradicts their earlier public statements.

Rockstar Games has sent out a surprising response to a fan who publicly received the illicitly generated money in GTA Online. Shocking as it may sound, they have no way of removing the money.

If you may remember, this hack was being perpetrated on modded consoles, and the money being brought into legitimate units, with the hackers going Robin Hood, spreading the money around everywhere. You can read more about it here.

The circumstances that led to this revelation are somewhat outstanding. Some fans put up a GTA Online stream a week ago, and were themselves the recipient of said money. They received the sum total of $ 973,000, which in terms of microtransactions would have cost them a real life amount of $ 20,000. In this case, of course, they had to bring it up with Rockstar.

In Rockstar’s words, they are not able to remove the money from the player’s game. In case they get a ban or penalty, they should contact Rockstar again.

What makes this response extra shocking is that they made a public statement that indicated otherwise. On their official site, they claimed  that they continued to balance the dynamic in-game economy and that they were working to adjust or close any exploits to get more cash. Rockstar also made it explicit that they were tracking down player data, as well as direct feedback, so that players can make sure everything in the game is done fairly and on the level.

It’s hard to explain exactly what is going on at the moment, but we hope Rockstar can make a specific statement regarding this Mega Exploit so that we get full clarity in the situation. In the meantime, we suggest you keep close tabs on the money you have in-game, and make sure to contact Rockstar if you received any illicit amounts.
