Pokemon X and Y: Introducing Mega Charizard X

October 2, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

The Pokemon X exclusive wants you to come over to the dark side.

The Pokemon Origins anime has dropped a new bomb on Pokemon fans, as within the show Charizard evolved into a different Mega Evolution. It has been confirmed that this is an alternate evolution for Charizard that is exclusive to Pokemon X.

Just to round things up, the previously revealed Mega Evolution, which we will call Mega Charizard Y, gains an extra horn on the top of its head, a longer spiked tail, and pseudo wings on its arms. Mega Charizard Y’s wings also get a more stretched out, sharpened appearance. It otherwise retains its familiar fiery orange hues, and blue eyes. Mega Charizard Y has the ability Drought and can learn the move Blast Burn.

Mega Charizard X, however, literally looks like a different species. It now becomes grey-black, with light blue highlights and underside. It now also spouts blue flames, some of which constantly blows across both sides of its mouth. Spikes protrude across the front and back of its arms, and its wings have become less reptilian, and now resemble crow’s wings. Most subtly, its eyes have now turned orange. No word on what abilities or moves this one can learn, but Nintendo has confirmed that when it does this evolution, it actually changes from Fire/Flying Type to Fire/Dragon Type Pokemon.

For context, here's how pre-Mega Evolution Charizard looks like.

And you thought Mewtwo’s two Mega Evolutions were out there! It seems likely now that Pokemon X andPokemon Y will have different Mega Evolutions for each of its Pokemon, increasing the range and collectability of them all. We do not know yet for sure if all Pokemon will have Mega Evolutions, which would exponentially increase that collectability to a frightening number.
