Sony: We’ve No Problem With EA

September 13, 2013 by Stephen Daly

EA praises PS4’s connectivity. ‘

Speaking to MCV PlayStation Europe's Jim Ryan said that despite a number of EA titles having exclusive Xbox One content and the company's deal with Microsoft to give FIFA 14 free to some European Xbox One Day One edition pre-orders there's no problem between EA and Sony.

Asked if there is a problem in Sony's relationship with EA Ryan said:

"No, not at all. It’s common knowledge that EA has done a deal with Microsoft, but all of its games – Battlefield, Need for Speed, FIFA – are all on PS4. In fact, the only platform you could play Battlefield 4 at gamescom was on PS4. Try and find that on Xbox One."

Commenting specifically on the FIFA 14 deal and whether Sony should respond with a similar deal he noted:

"We have over 1m pre-orders, so why would we need to do that? We had to switch off day one pre-orders, we are now onto day two, so why would we pour gasoline onto the fire? Platform holders and publishers run pre-order campaigns, and if you need to increase momentum then they dial it up a little bit with some promotional stuff, it’s a rational thing to do. But do we need to do that? No."

Ryan's comments about Sony's partnership with EA echoes the view of COO Peter Moore who has said EA "loves" both Sony and Microsoft. EA labels president Frank Gibeau has also insisted that the company has a "very good" relationship with Sony.

While Titanfall is being hailed as a major Microsoft exclusive the game is being published by EA Partners and the company says this means there has been no strategic shift in how it launches games on next-gen platforms.

Meanwhile, Moore has hailed the PlayStation 4's social connectivity aspect and the titles EA is bringing to the platform in a FOX News interview.

"Sports has always been popular on PlayStation. The EA Sports brand was built on the PlayStation platform. The connectivity now that the PlayStation Network provides really plays into what we do very well, so games like Madden and FIFA will do exceedingly well on PlayStation 4 and powered by the PlayStation Network."

"Our Battlefield 4 franchise launching on October 29 will be monstrous on PlayStation 4."

The PlayStation 4 is set to launch on November 15th in North America and on November 29th in Europe.
