Dragon Age Inquisition Live Demo Impresses With Its Breadth And Depth

September 1, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

You can even make enemies come to you Scorpion style.

We have new footage of a live demo from Dragon Age Inquisition showing off how much bigger the world is going to be, as well as all the changes and additions.

Let’s get something out of the way 1st. Did you read the lede? Here’s a frame by frame capture of the Inquisitor’s chain whip weapon, straight out of Mortal Kombat.

As the demo begins, developers provide commentary all throughout. They explain that Dragon Age Inquisition is bigger than both previous Dragon Age games combined. You can run in a straight line for as long as fifteen minutes. In the demo’s scenario, the Inquisitor is entering an area where the Inquisition already has a presence, and enemies have launched a counterattack against them. As the inspiration of the group, you have to be on the frontlines to help keep their morale up.

As the Inquisitor approaches the river, the devs point out the boats, which you can ride anytime, and the glowing green energy, which indicates an area where rifts into the other world (placed underwater) has been opened.

The Inquisitor then approaches some enemies and unleashes some of the carnage I’ve screencapped above. In the lead to some dialogue, the devs chime in that you are given full control of the camera to your desire. The option wheel that appears afterward gives you the type of choices that determine strategy: you can join allies still in recovery, or go after the enemy immediately, for example. Every choice and consequence is plainly spelled out.

The Inquisitor continues to go forward, as the devs explain your choices affect your relations with your party, that go beyond option trees. The world reacts to each action you take, down to where you go, in real time. Inquisition allows you to make these choices subtly, as they demonstrate you destroying enemy boats to cripple their forces discreetly.

The Inquisitor then enters a cave and grab onto a torch, which apparently has special properties of their own. He also passes by some markings, which you can examine and research back at home base, but goes ahead to take down some more enemies.

As a giant red monster comes out, the devs explain the combat options available to you. When the fight ends, they explain your health does not come back automatically, and you can carry limited health. These are deliberate choices by Bioware forcing you to plan out each encounter.

The demo then skips forward to another scene back at home base, preparing for another enemy encounter. At this point, they just show off the size of the world and the graphical detail Bioware has achieved. You pass by a cave, and they explain that there are caves to explore all around the game world.

The demo ends with a grisly scene, as you take a close look at a recently attacked outpost.

We have a shorter second video showing off showing off an encounter with a dragon. The audio is harder to comprehend here, unfortunately, but you can check it out and see what you can get out of it below.
