Civilization Online is an MMORPG that departs from the traditional turn-based gameplay of Firaxis's Civilization titles. Developed by XL Games, Civilization Online has players focus on individual careers rather than entire civilizations, meaning that players within each of the game's four civilizations must collaborate within their team to fend off against the opposition.
Speaking to Massively, the game's Executive Producer Jake Song described the PvP gameplay that defines the game.
"That's the core mechanic of the Civilization game — you conquer other civilizations by military or through technology," he said.
"We are planning to support various types of combat, like small 1v1 PvP stuff in the corner of the world, but you can also gather hundreds of people and invade Washington or some other city."
Like its predecessors, the world will be procedurally generated and span across multiple eras, including Ancient, Classical, Medieval, Renaissance, Industrial, and Modern. In each match, civilizations will compete against one another, from which only a single civilization will emerge victorious. Each world is considered a session, and play in that session continues until the victory conditions are met and one civilization wins.
