It might not be a brand-new Blizzard game, but people are still excited to experience Diablo 3 on consoles. We know that the loot-driven RPG will be making its way to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Sep. 3, marking the first true console appearance for the franchise. However, the planned PS4 port (and possible Xbox One edition) won’t be around until 2014.
This comes from Diablo Fans, who recently had the opportunity to interview Blizzard's Josh Mosqueira, Travis Day, and Wyatt Cheng. Although we hope to see both next-gen consoles release in November, the timing of the project just won’t line up with the hardware’s launch.
"The Diablo 3 team has actually just received the new PS4 development kits so the translation for that platform is yet to be done," Blizzard noted. “Diablo 3 will not be a launch-date title for the PS4. It will come in 2014."
Nothing has been said about when, or even if, the Xbox One version will happen. At this point, the PS4 game is the only one we’ve heard about, and since one of the major reasons for the 2014 next-gen date is so that Blizzard can make use of all the PS4’s unique features, it’s very likely that any other port could be even further down the road.
Diablo 3 will incorporate the Share and touchpad options the PS4 supports, and since this optimization takes a bit of time, any expansions that the PC version enjoys will take a bit longer to reach consoles. It’ll be a process for both consumers and developers, but really, it should be worth it to finally see a Diablo game on consoles.
