One of the most bizarre, exciting exclusives coming to the Xbox One is D4. A Swery65 game that will attempt to surpass Deadly Premonition’s insanity, D4 was demoed as a showcase of the new Kinect hardware at Microsoft’s E3 press conference. The episodic project will make ure of the camera, but according to a new information blowout from IGN, the entire experience can be controlled through the Xbox One controller, too.
D4, or "Dark Dreams Don't Die," is all about the story. The narrative-driven murder mystery will follow an episodic model reminiscent of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead, with the actual characters and themes breaking away from anything the point-and-click-focused studio has attempted. Instead of focusing on zombies or dog detectives, D4 asks players to help a man named David solve the murder of his wife. Somehow, David has the ability to jump back into memories and conduct investigations by making contact with certain mementos.
“Deadly Premonition… was a little bit weird,” Swery said. “And this one’s also a little bit weird.”
It’s as peculiar as you’d expect, and while it has been designed with the more-accurate Kinect in mind, you won’t be required to flail around your house to enjoy the game. Sure, it might be interesting to mimic David’s actions or run through his dialogue with your own voice, but purists will have controller support to lean on.
It’s nice to see a product that makes use of the camera, but doesn’t force you to try it. Hopefully it’ll be worth playing D4 in either format when it launches.
