51% Of Gamers Disagree With Videogaming Being Classified As An Addiction

June 21, 2018 by Jordan Coetsee

This survey takes a stand against the WHO.

A couple days ago we reported on WHO’s new classification of video gaming as an addiction – as you would expect the industry responded to the letter being drafted, stating that the evidence “remains highly contested and inconclusive. ”

Now, a new report by Qutee has shown that 51% gaming community disagrees with gaming being an addiction similar to gambling, alcoholism or drug abuse 26% of the pool was unsure about this topic, while 23% believed that indeed, gaming addiction is as bad as the aforementioned activities and substances.

Bringing back the age-old topic of video gaming and violence 93% of the surveyed group said that this obsession is entirely unjustified, 4% was unsure and 3% thought it’s justified. Below is the methodology used in the survey.

95% of the 835 gamers who participated were aged between 18 and 34, with 51% living in the US, 19% in the UK, and the remaining 30% living in other parts of the world.

The Gaming and You data discussion generated over 4.5k poll votes and 886 comments. 654 sentiments were recorded across 251 discussion topics, with some of the most popular issues discussed being community, stress, skills, friends, hobbies, enjoyment, and problems.

This entire controversy was recently sparked by media coverage on children’s addiction to Fortnite. In my opinion, I think it is the responsibility of parents to monitor their children’s consumption be it in entertainment or food, not that of the WHO.
