Sony Drops Mic, Announces $399 Price Point for PS4

June 10, 2013 by Jacob Saylor

The Playstation 4 will sell at $399, which is a drastic difference from the Xbox One’s $499.

After already poking fun at Microsoft just five minutes before regarding Digital Rights Management, Sony dropped yet another bombshell on the crowd at E3 2013: the Playstation 4 will cost just $399 out of the gate. While this isn't enormous news in and of itself, the fact that Microsoft priced its Xbox One at $499 is a big a deal.

Now, Microsoft has to decide whether or not they will drop their price on the Xbox One or try to save face and maintain the half-a-grand price point. That said, something tells us that Microsoft can't afford to make the system any cheaper, as each system comes packaged with a Kinect.

This little piece of equipment generally runs gamers over $100 – even used – and making it standard for your console will mean higher production costs. Sony won't have to worry about this issue, as the Playstation Eye is both cheaper and not required to make the Playstation 4 function.

All-in-all, Sony really dazzled this year. No matter what happens during the rest of the expo, there's absolutely nothing that can stop the hype train they've set on course for this year's holiday season.
