Fortnite May Get An Increased Playercap

April 16, 2018 by Jordan Coetsee

A limited game mode, perhaps?

There’s no doubt that Epic Game’s third-person shooter, Fortnite is a hot topic of conversation amongst most gamers. Love it or hate it, the game is chart shattering – and the support from the team behind it, is massive. Every week players get new content and updates to keep the game fresh and interesting. One of the more interesting teased content updates, however, has got to be the increased player cap of the usual 100-man lobby.

Epic’s Fortnite Design Lead Eric Williamson was interviewed in the latest Official PlayStation Magazine (May 2018, issue 148) and teased that the current 100 player cap for Fortnite Battle Royale might be increased at some point.

One of the things we’ve been talking about is, ‘does it  make sense to ever consider more than a hundred players?’ I think there’s a lot of technological considerations for something like that. I mean, personally, I would love to try it. I don’t see it in our near future but, hey, why not?

Adding to this, Williamson also spoke about how Epic Games is looking into integrating the PvE mode with the PvP.

We’ve talked about how things could more closely integrate. It’s a tough problem to solve because they’re different paces of game. Battle Royale is a 15-20 minute digestible experience whereas Save The World is an RPG with progressive elements. It’s not something that is easy to map from one to the other. Certainly we would love to try and be in that sort of space, but there’s a lot of problems trying to get there.

Each class has different collision ‘volumes’ on the different characters. If we were to put those classes into Battle Royale everyone would gravitate towards the one that has the smallest ‘hitbox’.

Finally, Williamson said that the Limited Time modes being cycled in Fortnite Battle Royale are a great way for Epic to experiment.

Those are really fun palate cleansers. they allow us to do things we couldn’t do in the core game. they give us the opportunity to break the game and tip everything on its head. Turn things around and try different stuff.

Could the increased player cap be a new limited mode? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments below.
