Ubisoft has been quite mum on the topic of multiplayer in Watch Dogs, but have today revealed some details about the game's multiplayer mode, which is said to seamlessly integrate into its single-player campaign.
In a preview feature on the official PlayStation Blog, the studio revealed that the game's main focus is on "hacking," an ability which allows its protagonist Aiden Pearce to hack just about anything, including ATMs and traffic lights. Aiden's ability will come into play throughout the game as he uses misdirection and surveillance to accomplish his goals. As he isn't as skilled a fighter as his counterparts in the Assassin's Creed series, Aiden will have to avoid confrontation with enemies by using remote cameras to show enemy positions and elude them as he pursues his targets.
When stealth isn't an option, Aiden must resort to no-holds-barred combat. He will be able to pursue both lethal and non-lethal approaches while in combat, but players are warned that killing civilians could put a serious damper on his reputation.
Aiden's ability to hack into the ctOS will allow him to control security cameras, open and closed doors, and cause a number of "dynamic and occasionally unpredictable events," which may show up during mission sequences. Hacking ctOS also provides him with various side quests and use the city's crime prediction system to pursue leads and protect civilians from bad guys before they get hurt.
Beyond ctOS, Aiden will be able to hack civilians by accessing free wi-fi. He is able to hack into their personal computers or even access their webcams for an inside look into their lives.
As for the game's multiplayer mode, Ubisoft says that the mode will "seamlessly overlap" with the single player campaign and that they are planning to extend the experience to apps on mobile devices. That's the extent to which they cared to talk about the mode.
