Talking to Reuters, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said he feels positive about the Wii U's sales. The comment comes after the end of the holiday season, where many Wii U's stayed stocked on shelves.
"At the end of the Christmas season, it wasn't as though stores in the U.S. had no Wii U left in stock, as it was when Wii was first sold in that popular boom. But sales are not bad, and I feel it's selling steadily," Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said in an interview.
Noting the popularity of the Deluxe Wii U over the standard one, Iwata admitted that even having two models new territory for Nintendo–and that it was somewhat challenging.
"It was the first time Nintendo released two models of the game console at the same time … and I believe there was a challenge with balancing this. Specifically, inventory levels for the premium, deluxe package was unbalanced as many people wanted that version and couldn't find it," he said.
Iwata didn't give any details about sales, but recognized that mobile devices are drawing potential customers away. Iwata said that Nintendo needs to focus on developing attractive software for the 3DS at the same time as increasing Wii U sales in order to rise above the competition.
