Ah video game movies. We need not even talk about the connotations they have, need we? People have been trying to desperately move away from those connotations by attempting to make movies that displease core fans but at the same time, don’t fail commercially at the box office. So this means that projects often don’t even get of the ground. I can name for example, quite a few movies that have been “in developmental stages” for years.
Maybe Deus Ex won’t be that way. Maybe it’s going to be a great movie for fans and critics alike. Maybe it’s going to actually going to get off the ground. Hey, we can dream right? Well there’s proof that it’s moving in the right direction: Deadline has reported that CBA has signed on Scott Dickerson to direct the movie.
Dickerson is known for Sinister, The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. But don’t get too excited—directors have signed on for movies in the past and end up leaving the project for various reasons. Still, Dickerson seems to at least played the game which gives him some street cred and the movie some hope. In fact, CBS also hired Dickerson’s co-writer from Sinister to help develop the script and direct. And they both reportedly played the entire game before agreeing to meet with producers.
“Deus Ex is a phenomenal cyberpunk game with soul and intelligence. By combining amazing action and tension with big, philosophical ideas, Deus Ex is smart, ballsy, and will make one hell of a movie. Cargill and I can’t wait to bring it to the big screen,” Derrickson said.
There’s no dates or any other hard info other than the producers who are Roy Lee (The Incident, How To Train Your Dragon) and Adrian Askarieh (Hitman, upcoming Kane & Lynch, with John P. Middleton as executive producer.
