As you're probably aware – if not because Microsoft has been shouting it from the rooftops then because you've seen the news that some long-time Xbox Live members are receiving free Xbox 360 consoles – it's the 10th anniversary of Xbox Live. But aside from the enviable limited edition 360s being given only to those in the US who've been with Xbox Live for the full ten years, we hadn't really seen much evidence of the celebrations Major Nelson promised:
#XboxLIVEis10 this week and yes we plan on celebrating it with you. Details in a few days.
But info is starting to appear on the Xbox website. If you're in the US, you can download a special Xbox Live 10-year gamerpic to enter a prize draw to win one of those limited edition consoles, so even if you haven't had Live for ten years you've still got a chance. And even if you dont' win the console, you might still win a few free months of Live or some Microsoft Points.
Unfortunately, the competition isn't running in the UK, though we do get the other benefits US owners will also have: 50% off a few arcade games (Castle Crashers, Fruit Ninja Kinect, Geometry Wars Evolved, Bastion, Peggle, and Full House Poker), and 48 hours in which to download Wreckateer for free. Now, I'll be honest with you; I've played Wreckateer, and it's pretty fun, but it's not amazing. And when you compare it with the opportunity to win one of those special consoles (or be rewarded with one if you've had Live for long enough), well, it just doesn't stand up.
