Now that Grand Theft Auto 5's Game Informer coverstory is out, it seems we're getting more and more info about GTA 5 as each day passes by. Luckily for the game's fans, this day won't be any different.
For those who have yet to read the latest issue of Game Informer or haven't been online to check out the massive info dump regarding Grand Theft Auto 5, you'll be surprised to know that the game will have three main characters and they will all be playable, too.
Even if Rockstar will let you play as three characters in the game, that doesn't mean each one will represent the protagonist. On the contrary, one of these three men will be the antagonist in GTA 5 and you'll be controlling them, too!
In an interview the New York Times, this fact was revealed by none other than Dan Houser, who not only is the head writer and vice president for creative, he's also the brother of the studio president, Sam Houser.
During this interview, Dan was asked, "How does the new, three-character structure help you get closer to the ambitions you have for the medium?" To which Houser revealed that in GTA 5, you'll play both the protagonist and antagonist in the game.
Just at the conceptual level, the idea was three separate stories that you play in one game. The next bit was, let’s not have the stories intersect once or twice but have them completely interwoven. It felt like it was going to be a real narrative strength: you get to play the protagonist and the antagonist in the same story.
We still don't know which of the three will be antagonist or if there's more than one. So, what if you prefer the "antagonist" over the protagonist? Do we have an option to be the bad guy? If so, wouldn't doing so mean that this new "bad guy" will, in turn, be the new protagonist?
Following that reveal, we also have an image (courtesy of Reddit) that shows the stark difference between Vinewood from last generation, to Grand Theft Auto 5's Vinewood. This place is, of course, Grand Theft Auto's take on "Hollywood," and was featured first in GTA: San Andreas. Now that Grand Theft Auto 5 is known to take place on Los Santos, Vinewood will be destination in the game once more.
Here's how good we have it now compared to GTA: San Andreas.
Very impressive, no? Can you imagine what Grand Theft Auto 6 will look like on next-gen platforms? If it's as big of a leap as the screens above, we might start needing napkins to wipe the virtual blood from all the in-game baddies we waste since it will look that good.
Grand Theft Auto 5 is scheduled to ship in Spring 2013 for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
