Mario’s Absence in Wreck-It-Ralph Explained

October 23, 2012 by Matt Hawkins

Gaming’s most recognized personality is nowhere, but for reasons you might not have expected.

Many can't wait for Disney's upcoming CGI animated feature. One major reason is the large number of cameos, famous faces from countless games, which are contained. And which is another reason why many are drawing comparisons between it and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

We know already know that Sonic plays a noticeable role, and many of the ads have led one to believe that the superstar from the golden age of the arcade, Q*Bert, will also get a decent chunk of the spotlight. Yet there is also a noticeable absence. The biggest video game personality of them all: Nintendo's Mario.

Many have asked why, and GamesRadar finally has the answer. Which is genuinely surprising; apparently, it was the call of the writer and the director. Not Nintendo demanding too much money or creative control, as many have theorized. The creators simply believed that Mario was too important to waste on just a simple cameo.

They didn't want him part of some throw away gag, so the creators tried to find something more "weighty", like a major scene, but nothing could be figured out either. Though Rich Moore, the director, states that if all goes well and if there is a sequel, maybe they can work him in then.
