Super Mario Run: How to Unlock 5 Bonus Characters | Yoshi, Luigi & More

December 16, 2016 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Unlock five bonus friends in Super Mario Run for iOS — just follow these simple steps. You’ll need to save the Princess, then recruit a whole lot of Toads.

Super Mario Run isn’t just about everyone’s favorite high-jumping plumber. That cast  of fan-favorite characters makes a comeback, with the likes of Luigi, Yoshi, and Princess Peach all returning as playable characters in this side-scrolling, bite-sized platformer. They aren’t available right from the start — you’ll have to complete some challenges before Toadette and the rest decide to join in on the fun.

Below we’ve got all the steps you need to get the complete cast of Mushroom Kingdom characters. There’s Yoshi, Peach, Luigi, Toad and Toadette, and they all have their own unique character quirks that’ll give you an edge on each stage. For instance, Princess Peach can float to the ground. Yoshi gets an extra burst of air-time. And Luigi? Well, he has a weird jump. Luigi is the less popular of the duo for a reason.

How to Unlock All 5 Bonus Characters

There are 5 extra characters you can unlock in Super Mario Run — Luigi, Toad, Yoshi, Peach, and Toadette. That’s a total of 6 playable characters that you can select. Each has their own unique quirks that makes completing challenges easier (or harder!) depending on who you choose.

To unlock each character, you’ll have to complete certain challenges. Here are all the steps for all five unlockable characters:

  • How to Unlock Toad:
    • Connect Super Mario Run to your My Nintendo account.
      • Sign up for a My Nintendo account here: https://my.nintendo.com/
    • Tap “My Nintendo” in the map / Kingdom view.
    • When linked, tap Toad.
      • Many of the rewards in My Nintendo require platinum coins — not Toad! He’s free, so grab him whenever you want.
    • Tap the Gift Box in the map / Kingdom view to unlock Toad.
  • How to Unlock Peach:
    • Clear all 24 worlds and defeat Bowser in the final castle.
    • Princess Peach will then unlock. It’s just that simple.

The last three characters can only be unlocked by recruiting Toads. Toads can be recruited in the Toad Rally game mode, where you challenge other players by spending Toad Rally Tickets. These tickets are earned by collecting special coins in stages, and you’ll start with 20 after purchasing the full game.

When playing Toad Rally, you’ll see what type of Toad you’ll recruit. Choose the right players to get the Toads you need for these three characters.

  • How to Unlock Yoshi:
    • Recruit 30 Red Toads
    • Recruit 30 Yellow Toads
    • Purchase Yoshi’s House (1000 Coins) from the Kingdom Shop.
  • How to Unlock Luigi:
    • Recruit 150 Green Toads
    • Recruit 150 Purple Toads
    • Purchase Luigi’s House from the Kingdom Shop.
  • How to Unlock Toadette:
    • Recruit 200 Red Toads
    • Recruit 200 Blue Toads
    • Recruit 200 Green Toads
    • Recruit 200 Purple Toads
    • Purchase Toadette’s House from the Kingdom Shop.
