Monster Hunter Wilds: How to Mount a Monster

March 25, 2025 by Matt Villei

Grab ’em by the horns!

Climbing atop the monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds is a key component of the game and will allow players to deal some massive damage by getting onto these massive creatures. Some players might be struggling to figure out how to get onto the monsters but luckily I can provide assistance to anyone that needs help! So, allow me to show you how to climb onto these deadly creatures. This guide will show players how to mount a Monster in Monster Hunter Wilds.

How to Mount a Monster in Monster Hunter Wilds

To mount a monster, you will need to deal enough Mount Damage to the creature. This damage type is done when you attack a monster while in the air. This can be done with any weapon but some weapons that launch you airborne like the Sword and Shield or Insect Glaive have a much easier time doing this. For other weapons, you can do Mount Damage by using the environment and jumping from a higher point to attack the monster. You can also do airborne attacks by jumping off the back of your Seikret and attacking while in the air. You will need to build up enough Mount Damage to pass an unseen threshold. When you reach a specific threshold, deal another close-range airborne attack to the monster and you will mount it.

Once you do mount the monster, you can attack it in a few different ways. You can use your standard attack buttons to stab the monster quickly with a knife or you can press the Focus Attack button to strike the beast with your weapon. Doing this is much slower but deals higher damage. While on top of the monster, it will try to throw you off. Your stamina is the yellow bar in the top left corner and if it runs out, you will be knocked off the mount. You can tell that the creature is about to do an attack when the borders of the screen start to turn black. You can either brace yourself and grab tightly onto the creature or move to a different spot on its back. All monsters have at least 2 spots to grab onto during a mount while many have more that you can move between.

The monster’s stamina is the ring around the monster’s portrait in the bottom left of the screen. The circle will go from blue to red, shrinking the more damage is done to it. When you do enough damage, you will stagger the monster and the mount will end. If you do enough damage to a spot during the mount, a Wound will appear. Use a Focus Attack on the spot to get a unique attack that does massive damage and also gives you an item. This will immediately end the mount.

After you dismount the monster, you can do it again by doing more Mount Damage but the threshold you need to reach will increase. This means it will take more airborne attacks to cause amount.

You now know how to mount a Monster in Monster Hunter Wilds. Stay tuned to Gameranx for more news, updates, and guides for Monster Hunter Wilds as well as other great games in the future.
