There are many out there who want to play games with their friends but aren’t always able to because you don’t have the same game. But with these free co-op games, that’s no longer an issue.
#14 Super Mario Bros X
We will start with a free game because it is “community-based.” As in, it’s a group of gamers who made the title and then left it open for others to jump in and play. It’s free because they know that Nintendo would be all over them if they charged anything for it.
Anyway, Super Mario Bros X is a free game that combines parts of the first three Super Mario Bros games to create its own thing.
You can even make your own plot for these titles and see how much fun you can have. Of course, it’s not official, but it is clever.
#13 Genshin Impact
We think it’s very apropos for Genshin Impact to be at #13 on our list because it’s a free title, but you’ll likely spend money on it were you to get addicted.
Why? Because the game plays like a mix of an open-world title and an RPG. One of the RPG elements is teaming up with various characters, so help expand your roster and arsenal. The catch is that those extra characters come from summons. You can build up Summons over time by getting the right items or paying for them! It’s a trap!
So don’t get suckered in, and just enjoy the free co-op game!
#12 Unturned
If you’re looking for a simple yet expansive co-op title to enjoy for free, then perhaps Unturned is one to look into.
The game’s plot is simple. You are in a world where almost everyone has become a zombie. You are one of the few that has managed to stay unbitten, and you roam the world trying to survive and keep it that way.
With a co-op partner, surviving the zombie apocalypse will be easier. But it also means you’ll need to look out for one another and keep your partner safe from the hordes you inevitably encounter. So dive in and see how long you last!
#11 No More Room in Hell
It’s always interesting to see the games made by the modding community and how they grow into distinct titles.
No More Room in Hell was a mod that won many awards and even got a full-on sequel! The concept was based on the legendary movies of George Romero. In it, the world is slowly falling into ruin thanks to a virus that turns people into zombies. Anyone who dies becomes one, so your goal is not to die!
There are multiple modes to test your skills in, including a campaign mode, a survival mode, and playing with friends. Do you think you can survive the undead?
#10 Warface
FPS games are all over the place and come in all shapes and sizes. With Warface, you get an MMO-style FPS that’ll allow you lots of customization and options for gameplay.
You’ll design your character and choose from five available classes to see what kind of soldier you’ll be. Then, once you’re ready, you’ll dive into the multiple modes of the title. Some will be familiar to FPS fans, and others will be fresh ideas to keep things interesting.
The game constantly gets content so there’s always something to do. So grab a co-op partner and dive in to see how dominant you can be!
#9 Alien Swarm
Are you ready to kill some bugs? Alien Swarm has you teaming up with three other players to attempt to eradicate alien bugs that have overthrown a colony.
But it’s not as simple as pointing at the bugs and shooting at them. Instead, you’ll need to work with your squad and use smart tactics to overcome the challenges of the bugs and the environment.
You’ll be sent to multiple parts of the colony to try and take back control. The more you level up, the more items and weapons you’ll have access to. So work as a unit and take back the colony before the bug colony takes you out.
#8 Muck
There are plenty of survival games out there to do with friends if you want. However, muck puts the scenario you’re in a bit on its head.
You get trapped on an island and are asked to survive on it. That sounds pretty basic, which means it’s anything but. Not only are you stuck on the island in more ways than one, but there are also monsters that roam the island that tend to come out at night.
So not only will you need to keep your character alive from the natural elements, but you’ll need to take on behemoths that won’t hesitate to squash you.
#7 World of Tanks Blitz
Sometimes you just want to blow things up with a powerful vehicle. For example, who hasn’t wanted to drive a tank and blast its cannon at something you see in the distance? That’s what we thought.
World of Tanks Blitz puts you and others in 7v7 tank battles to see who is the best tank commander of the bunch. You’ll have over 300 vehicles to choose from as you progress, each with its own perks and setbacks.
With 26 areas to battle on, you’ll need to learn the terrain and see how you can wield it to your advantage. So load up your ride and send your enemies to kingdom come!
#6 Spiral Knights
Are you looking for a game that has lots of action and is always moving at a fast pace? Spiral Knights is a title that embraces that philosophy in more ways than one!
The game features you and your co-op friends as aliens who crash land on a planet. The only way to get off it is to go deep beneath the surface and find the mysterious core.
Only together can you make it through the challenges ahead. You’ll need to explore the depths of the world, fight the monsters that appear, and solve puzzles to continue down the path.
Will you make it off the planet?
#5 Neverwinter Nights
The classic tabletop game has been turned into multiple video games over the years. But if you want a free co-op title, you must get Neverwinter Nights. The RPG lets you build your character from the ground up and then venture into the land to help save the city of Neverwinter.
Why? Because the city has become ill via a plague. You and your allies must find a cure before all is lost! But it won’t be easy. There are plenty of obstacles standing in your way. You’ll have to fight through hordes of monsters, so build up your character to take on all threats and save the people of Neverwinter!
#4 Path of Exile
Given the current “status” of a renowned action RPG from Blizzard, you might be looking for a free alternative to enjoy. Path of Exile will scratch that itch and then some. You play as a character who has been banished to a continent full of monsters, and you want revenge!
To do so, you must work through hordes of creatures and dark places and harness incredible powers. Those powers are tied to a class that you can choose. So see what each one can do, and then venture into the darkness to see what terror you can unleash!
The more you do, the more items and armor you can access. Get what you need to take out those that have cursed you to this place!
#3 Guild Wars 2
MMORPGs are a quick way to get into a co-op experience, and Guild Wars 2 is free to play! That’s lucky for you because the game has an expansive world full of content to enjoy.
One of the things that the game emphasizes is making the character of your choice that fits your playstyle. So pick your race, then give them the class you think is best! After that, modify and grow your character through quests, getting new items and armor, etc.
The world is massive and filled with things to do. So whether you do it alone, with a partner, or in a group, you will have a fun experience.
#2 Destiny 2
It’s appropriate that we put Destiny 2 on the list at the No.2 spot not only because it’s the second game in the franchise but because it was a ‘second chance’ for Bungie to show off their vision of what the game could be.
The first game was fine, but it had issues that bugged players. With the sequel, they did their best to expand on what you could do solo and in co-op and make every piece of content meaningful. To their credit, the game’s content is still pouring out. It’ll end soon enough, but many are enjoying the game still.
So whether you explore with friends or team up to take on enemies and raids, you’ll have fun with the free content given.
#1 Warframe
We’ve shown you many exciting titles throughout this list, but Warframe is the one that millions have enjoyed for years now and enjoys how it continues to expand.
Long story short, in the game, you’ll play as a race of beings who are infused in suits known as Warframes. These Warframes have different abilities and skills to wield as you attempt to save the galaxy from disaster.
So in co-op, you each could wield a different Warframe and combine your skills to ensure victory. With over 50 Warframes to use and over 500 weapons you can put on them, you’re not going to be lacking for variety.
