30 Best Backwards Compatible Games To Play On Xbox Series X | S

November 7, 2020 by Kevin Thielenhaus

The best games on the last three generations of Xbox — here’s some of the best games for Microsoft’s backwards compatible console.

Best Backwards Compatible Games On Xbox Series X | S:

  • 1-5 Must-Play Xbox Original Games
  • 5-10 Must-Play Xbox Original Games
  • 1-5 Must-Play Xbox 360 Games
  • 5-10 Must-Play Xbox 360 Games
  • 1-5 Must-Play Xbox One Games
  • 5-10 Must-Play Xbox One Games

Must-Play Backwards Compatible Games | Xbox One

Gears Of War Series [Cover Shooter | AVAILABLE On The Game Pass]

And now we come to another no-brainer. The entire Gears of War series — 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Judgement and Tactics are available on the Xbox Game Pass. And all of them are worth checking out. The series follows a squad of troopers fighting an army of subterranean monsters. It’s a cover-shoot with a focus on tactics and brutal violence — there’s a reason your main weapon in most games has an underbarrel chainsaw.

Killer Instinct [Fighting | AVAILABLE On The Game Pass]

One of the best fighting games of the last generation, and most of us completely missed out. Killer Instinct started out simple, but slowly evolved into one of the best fighters available anywhere thanks to creative characters, amazing music, and plenty of modes to keep everyone coming back. The massive singleplayer mode is fun even if you’re not feeling up to a competitive online fight.

Quantum Break [Third-Person Shooter | AVAILABLE On The Game Pass]

It’s a game by Remedy, the creators behind Max Payne, Alan Wake, and Control. It’s an ambitious little game, split into episodes like a TV series — and even featuring a live-action counter-part series that’s fun but not quite essential to the narrative. It’s a twisty, fast-paced shooter where you’ll only survive against the armies of an evil corporation thanks to a variety of time powers. Move aside Max Payne, you can do more than just slow time.

Sea of Thieves [Multiplayer Sandbox | AVAILABLE On The Game Pass]

One of the weirdest open-world multiplayer games available now, Sea of Thieves started out underwhelming but has iterated into a very cool little game with plenty of activities to explore while piloting a pirate ship. You and your friends have to work together to steer and fire the cannons, all while completing quests in a massive Caribbean environment. The skeletons aren’t your worst problem — it’s all the other players looking to take your booty.

Cuphead [2D Action Platformer |NOT On The Game Pass]

Another game that’s available on other consoles, but originally released on the Xbox One. Cuphead is an incredibly creative action-platformer where you face off against 20+ unique bosses styled after ’20s cartoons. The animation is unbelievably smooth, but you can’t pay too much attention because this game is hard. Like, really hard — it’s merciless to anyone that isn’t prepared for a serious challenge.

And that’s all our recommendations! There are SO many backwards compatible games, we couldn’t even touch 1% of everything out there — so feel free to let us know all about your faves.
