10 Scariest Moments In Games That Aren’t Scary

October 30, 2020 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Sometimes, non-horror games have the most terrifying moments — and we’ve listed 10 of the most memorably fear-inducing.

#5. The Dianoga Sewer [Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire]

Later in Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, you’ll have to navigate a gross sewer. Every Star Wars fan knows what’s coming next — you have to deal with the giant dianoga. This disgusting beast lurks in sewage, where it attacked our heroes while lurking in the Death Star trash compactor in the very first Star Wars movie.

This gross critter strikes from the shadows, and Shadows of the Empire finally lets you take the ugly thing in. Using a jetpack, you can navigate the underwater and shoot down the dianoga. This isn’t the only frightening sequence to start the beast in video games — there’s another sewer level in Dark Forces where you’ll have to fight back dianogas as they pop out of their underwater hiding spots.

#6. Alphys’s Lab [Undertale]

There’s a sinister edge to the opening minutes of Undertale, the indie darling that’s all about making friends instead of enemies. Nobody dies in Undertale, and your hero uses good humor and a lot of determination to make friends with even your most bitter enemies. It’s a cute story where danger lurks around every corner, but everyone makes it through the day okay.

Until you reach the spook-fest that is Alphys’s Secret Lab. This hidden location is only available in the True Ending Route, and it is super-spooky. The dark, abandoned interior is haunted by senseless amalgams of previous enemies you’ve fought. Some are silly, while others are deeply unsettling. There are jump-scares and spooky things to deal with everywhere, making it genuinely unnerving if you’re playing in the dark. I know it definitely spooked me.
