Risk of Rain 2: How To Unlock All Playable Characters (So Far) | Survivors Guide

April 1, 2019 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Unlock all five of the available Survivors in Risk of Rain 2 — here’s how to complete every challenge.

Surprising the internet, Risk of Rain 2 dropped in a fully playable form on March 28th with no prior announcement. That means fans of the previously 2D rogue-like can jump right in. Like the previous game, Risk of Rain, you’ll be able to right through multiple randomly-generated worlds. But, they’ve added another dimension to the sequel. You’ll now have to explore (and fight) in fully 3D environments, and you can team up with a group of up to four friends to take down each area.

This is a rogue-like, so naturally there will be improvements and updates over the game’s still-early lifespan. One of the cool things the developers plan to update are the playable classes. As of this writing, there are five playable classes you can unlock, and each one comes with their own strengths and weaknesses. You’ll want to try them all, so here’s a quick overview explaining how to unlock all five characters.

How To Unlock All Playable Characters (So Far) | Challenge Guide

There are currently five unlockable playable character classes, including lots of survivors that are already unlocked. Some are totally new — Artificer and MUL-T. There are several survivors from the first game too — Commando, Huntress, and Engineer. Here are the unlockable (and playable) classes you’ll need to earn.

Artificer: Spend 10 Lunar Coins in the Bazaar Between Realms.

Lunar Coins are a special currency that you don’t lose on death. The Bazaar Between Realms can be accessed from a randomly-generated portal, or by spending a coin at special Statues. To unlock the Artificer, use 10 Lunar Coins on the altar next to the crystal containing this character — you need 10 when you enter. You can earn 11 coins before attempting this run. You don’t have to worry about losing progress.

MUL-T: Complete the first Teleporter Event 5 times.

Very basic. All you need to do is complete the first area in five separate occasions. Charge the teleporter and beat the boss five times.

Mercenary: Obliterate yourself at the Obelisk. How?

Essentially, you need to ‘complete’ a run. Finish all the stages without dying, and you’ll loop around to the first map. White Portals will appear at Rallypoint Delta — go through a ‘celestial’ portal, and carefully drop down the large platforming puzzle until you reach an Obelisk. Interact to get destroyed and complete a full rotation.

Huntress: Reach and complete the third Teleporter Event without dying.

To do this, you need to reach the third map without dying, and complete the charging sequence / boss battle at the end. It’s just like unlocking MUL-T, except you only need to reach the third map once.

Engineer: Complete 30 stages.

Like the MUL-T unlock, you simply need to complete 30 maps total. This is a persistent count, so you don’t need to complete 30 maps in a row. You can die and continue later — you can complete the first map thirty separate times. As long as you hit that threshold, you’ll unlock the Engineer.
