Ubisoft has released a new trailer for Splinter Cell: Blacklist today and it shows Sam Fisher being protected by the "Fifth Freedom."
If you're not familiar with Splinter Cell games, Fifth Freedom refers to Fisher and how he's given immunity by the Commander-in-Chief to do whatever it takes to get the job done — yes, that involves killing lots of people.
It's a taken from former U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms" speech where it states that everyone should have four fundamental freedoms as a birthright. If you're not familiar with them, they are: Freedom of Speech and Expression, Freedom of Worship, Freedom of Want and Freedom of Fear. For special cases like Fisher, the "Fifth Freedom is given.
In the video, the U.S. President herself gives Fisher this "right" and he uses it…visciously.
While it might not be everyone's cup of tea, I admit, I like it when Fisher gets brutal. It adds a touch of realism and grittiness to the game that will make you cringe and admire Fisher at the same time. For those that watched the TV show 24, you know what I'm talking about with its outlandish "interrogation" techniques that Fisher seems to have emulated both in Conviction and in Blacklist.
One thing that is a little bit disorienting though is listening to Fisher speak and not hearing Ironside's voice. It's almost become who he is that it will take some getting used to — at least from me.
Splinter Cell: Blacklist is scheduled to hit next year for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
