Love (and various tenses thereof) is a pretty popular title for independent games. One of my favorites of this register is Alexander Ocias’s Loved, a little five-minute venture through the most abusive relationship many of us will (fortunately) ever experience. This Love is not that one. This Love is Eskil Steenberg’s painterly, procedurally generated open-world experience, and it’s probably a much healthier relationship than most of the ones you could get into with a game. Words can’t really do the game justice so here, have a look.
According to Eurogamer, Steenberg “wasn’t getting the attention it deserved buried under a monetary barrier” and so released the game of its previous subscription model.
It’s a brand new type of game so there are many mistakes to be made but I think that I finally am figuring it out… Now I just want people to play it.
Love’s players (which sounds like some play-within-a-play that Shakespeare would write) can still donate to its developer and receive a voucher to exchange for a persistent character and movable rally points, or just out of the goodness of their hearts because seriously, look at this thing. You can see why Steenberg wanted to share his creation with the world, even for free.
To play Love or to donate to its developer, drift on over to its official site, Quel Solaar.
