The producer of The Last of Us movie, Sam Raimi, who’s best known for his work on the first Spiderman movies, says that the movie’s still happening—but it won’t be coming out any time soon as production is currently in a “standstill.”
The movie had previously been reported to be in some sort of development hell, with nothing moving forward on production. Speaking to IGN, Raimi says that the production stalled due to disagreements between franchise holder Sony and the movie’s scriptwriter, Neil Druckmann, who also made the video game upon which it is based.
“[Sony] have their own plans for it and I think Neil’s plan for it, I’m not trying to be political, Neil’s plan for it is not the same as Sony’s,” said Raimi. “And because my company doesn’t have the rights, I actually can’t help him too much.”
Raimi says he is uncertain as to how things will move forward given that neither side can reach a compromise, but he hopes to move forward with production if and when that happens.
“Right now it’s just sitting there. They don’t want to move forward, and it’s not my place to say why, and Neil, I think, is in a slight disagreement with [Sony] about how things should go so there’s a standstill.”
The movie’s cast has not yet been announced, but Maisie Williams is strongly rumored to be playing the role of Ellie.
