Nintendo has finally made good on the promise of VRR on the Switch 2.
When the Switch 2 was first revealed, Nintendo claimed it supported VRR, but then removed that claim on their website. It then appeared that Nintendo was still working on actually adding that feature after the fact.
Today, we learned that Switch 2 update 23.0.0 and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour update 1.1.0 have added VRR support.
The Switch 2 update is actually for the dock, so VRR only works in TV mode. As John Linneman confirmed on Bluesky, VRR support also needs to be added to each game individually. He confirmed that it does work on Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour.
Nintendo Patents Watch then pointed out that Nintendo filed a patent to make VRR work from April of this year. Putting all of this together, Nintendo probably knew that they could make VRR work on the console, but they weren’t able to finish development in time for launch.
Admittedly, only a minority of Switch 2 users can even take advantage of VRR, but hopefully support spreads to more games quickly.
