Does Borderlands 4 Indicate Sony Has Abandoned The PS5 Pro?

September 15, 2025 by Ryan Parreno

Is it fitting for Borderlands 4 to be taking the PSSR?

A content creator has raised good questions about the PlayStation 5 Pro, by way of Borderlands 4.

Synth Potato shared this rant on Twitter:

What is going on at Sony with the PS5 Pro?

The fact that TWO major releases this month didn’t even have PS5 Pro support AT ALL with Cronos & Borderlands 4 is a shock considering BL4 has Sony marketing behind it.

How are they letting their new system get ignored like this?

And then there was MGS Delta where PS5 Pro was arguably the worst place to play the game across the board due to how badly PSSR was implemented.

Genuinely what is going on? I thought this console was marketed as all future major releases supporting it, I am so disappointed

How Is Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro Support In 2025?

It isn’t just Borderlands 4, but also Bloober Team’s Cronos: The New Dawn that released this month without PlayStation 5 Pro Enhanced features. And just so we’re clear, there have been a lot of PlayStation 5 Pro Enhanced games in the year 2025.

In fact, two of those PlayStation 5 Pro Enhanced games are from Microsoft! That would be Indiana Jones and The Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Ages. The snub from Borderlands 4 is a bad look at the face of it.

It must be said that Sony does not mandate developers add PlayStation 5 Pro enhancements to their games. They are rewarded with an Enhanced certification if they did. At the very least, developers do need to check if their PlayStation 5 games are fully compatible with the PlayStation 5 Pro.

So, Gearbox’s marketing deal with Sony does not require them to use PSSR or make Borderlands 4 PlayStation 5 Pro Enhanced at all. As we’ve seen, Gearbox needs to catch up to optimizing their games on all platforms. So maybe it wasn’t realistic to think they would go for that.

But then again, there’s another potential reason for this.

PSSR 2.0 Is Coming

As we learned last week, Sony worked with AMD to make a new version of Playstation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) for the PlayStation 5 Pro.

This is part of Sony’s and AMD’s Amethyst project, where the two companies worked together on new technology. As Sony clarified, they were not able to bring over AMD’s FSR 4 itself to the console. So this new updated version of PSSR will have some features from FSR 4 instead.

That all sounds well and good, and we’re sure it will make Sony’s first party titles shine. But it remains to be seen how that will affect the experience of the console users.

Can Borderlands 4 Become A Selling Point For The PlayStation 5 Pro?

PlayStation 5 Pro launched last year, with a lot of skepticism over its high price. That cost should have been justified with improved games, but not every game saw improvements on the console.

This will all ultimately depend on how well Sony and AMD shares and teaches this technology to third parties. But that takes us back to our initial speculation.

What if Gearbox held back on optimization because they were waiting for this new and improved PSSR? PlayStation 5 users may have been forced to wait. But if the gains are that big, then Sony just might make that wait worthwhile.
