“Are you ready for a new Pac-Man game?” That seems like a odd question to present to someone in modern gaming. But Pac-Man 256 is still worth a look, even if it’s just to see how the formula can be expanded for the series.
From the development teams of Hipster Whale/3 Sprockets, and Bandai Namco comes a new generation of the Pac-Man game. While it’s based on a mobile game, the PC/Console release is going to have additional features. You’ll have the chance to play with friends via local multiplayer co-op mode, along with sharing options and unlockable themes.
The premise in itself comes from the glitched Pac-Man kill screen. The game wasn’t meant to have an ending, and hypothetically was intended to go on indefinitely. But when the internal level counter reaches 255, it then rolls over to zero. This causes the game to draw a total of 256 fruit instead of the standard maximum of seven, causing the screen to glitch out with random symbols and letters.
“We have really enjoyed working with Bandai Namco Entertainment and Hipster Whale on Pac-Man 256 for mobile, and having the opportunity to ship it on the latest generation of consoles and PC is the icing on the cake for us! We can’t wait to see how much fun players have with it” says Director at 3 Sprockets, Seon Rozenblum.
Pac-Man 256 arrives June 21st for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. For updates, check out the Facebook page for the latest Pac-Man details.
