Ghost of Yotei had quite a few people interested in stepping into this world. Coming from the talented folks at Sucker Punch Productions, the game will continue the franchise from 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima. However, early on in the marketing, we learned that the developers had a new protagonist. We’re not getting Jin Sakai for this game, and now the developers are explaining their reasoning for moving away from a new ghost.

If you’re a fan of Jin from the original Ghost of Tsushima, it might have been more than a bummer not to see some kind of a return. Instead, we’re getting a new protagonist named Atsu. To take it one step further, the developers even set the game several hundred years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima initially took place.

Sucker Punch Productions Reveals Why They Dropped Jin

Thanks to a new interview at VGC, they managed to speak with Nate Fox and Jason Connell, the directors behind the upcoming game. During their conversation, Nate Fox explained that they loved Jin Sakai. I guess you would have to if you dedicated years to building his story out and watching it slowly come to life in a video game.

However, Nate went on to say that when charting out a new story for the sequel, they wanted to make something that excited all of Sucker Punch. That’s when it was decided to adopt a brand-new storyline and character. Atsu would give that not only to the developers, but also to the thrill of the origin storyline, which should provide players with a fresh new experience as well.

I’m sure you’re more than familiar with this by now, but Atsu is a ronin seeking out the Yotei Six. Years prior, Atsu found this group of outlaws terrorizing her home, slaughtering her family, and pinning her to a burning tree to die. Escaping, Atsu would spend over a decade preparing for her vengeance.

Get Ready To Explore

Of course, another big component of this installment is the exploration element. Players are encouraged to explore the world freely and seek out points of interest. So, if you want to let the campaign narrative take a backseat, it seems that you’ll find plenty of things to uncover and adventures to take on just by roaming in this open world. We even got a look at some of the exploration highlights and combat in a recent deep dive video.

Players interested in the game can expect Ghost of Yotei to land on October 2, 2025, for the PlayStation 5. Still need a PlayStation 5? Perhaps this themed special edition PS5 model, based on the game, might be of interest.
