Have you ever wanted something so bad that when you didn’t get it, it actually felt like you were hurting? It’s a deep question, we know, but for a certain sect of gaming fans, they’re going through that right now. Currently, the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy IX is happening, and Square Enix, to its credit, has done various things to “celebrate” it. They’ve done special art to honor it; they dropped the opening sequence online for people to watch continually, and, as we’re about to discuss, they’ve made it easier than ever for you to buy it for a low price.
Today, the official Twitter handle for the RPG franchise revealed that Final Fantasy IX is on sale via Steam, Nintendo eShop, and other platforms by up to 70%!
So, if you’ve never played the game before and you want to see why so many people love the title and are celebrating its big anniversary, now is your chance!
…the problem, though, is that while this is a “nice gesture” and something some gamers will like, the vast majority of them are still waiting for Square Enix to announce the remake of the game! The rumors around said remake have been spreading for years, and it seemed like the 25th anniversary would be a lock to make it happen.
Yet, Square Enix has been silent, and now, there are rumors that the game isn’t coming back because they canceled the remake outright! If that’s the case, gamers will be both furious and sad all at once, which is not a good combination for a gaming fan. For those that don’t know, while the ninth entry in the beloved RPG series may not be the most famous, it is considered by fans to be one of the best entries in the saga. It had great visuals, a fun story, and a memorable cast of characters that endures to this day.
In that Twitter post above? The comments are truly littered with replies asking for the remake. That should tell you the love that fans have for the game.
One of the ironies of this is that the game MAY have been in development, but could’ve been one of the casualties of Square Enix’s “restructuring” that took place not too long ago. After all, a certain other set of remakes haven’t sold as much as they were “expecting,” and perhaps they felt this one would follow that same path.
