The Nintendo Switch 2’s Launch Has Shattered Even More Records

June 16, 2025 by Todd Black

Now you’re playing with (record) power.

It’s been quite a few weeks for the Nintendo Switch 2, wouldn’t you say? In the lead-up to its launch on June 5th, many were wondering if it would truly “meet the expectations.” Many online were saying that the “hype had died down” and that a lot of people “wouldn’t buy things because of the price of the system and its games.” So, naturally, many of those people had to pivot their complaints when the Switch 2 sold 3.5 million units in just its first four days. A launch that was the biggest in the history of the gaming industry and definitively put Nintendo on top once more.

However, people wanted even more information about what was going on with the console. Thankfully, through information from Circana via Blue Sky, we know two more key records that the Nintendo Switch 2 broke upon its launch. We’ll start with the United States. It sold 1.1 million units in its first few days. The “week” ended on June 7th, and so it sold 1.1 million across those first few days. Obviously, that helped a huge bit in getting to 3.5 million units.

Nintendo Switch 2 set a new all-time launch week unit sales record for video game hardware in the US, with over 1.1 million units sold during the week ending June 7, 2025 (excludes sales from the My Nintendo Store). The record was previously held by PlayStation 4.

They went on to note that Mario Kart World was also a huge success, with about 80% of everyone who got a Switch 2 getting the game as part of the bundle that was offered, which was a cheaper way of getting the game or just buying the physical game straight-up. No word on digital offerings, but Nintendo doesn’t tend to reveal those numbers. Either way, if we’re talking 80% of 1.1 million, that means that the game would have sold over 800K in just the US alone, so the Switch easily already has its first million-seller.

Just as important, in terms of record-breaking performances, is how the Switch 2 did in Japan. In its opening days, it reached over 940K in sales, as noted by Famitsu. That was over its first four days in the country. It’s important to remember that, just like with the United States numbers, the figure doesn’t count any purchases made from the Nintendo Store. That’s important to remember, as Japan alone had 2.2 million people trying to get the console via that service. Nintendo’s President even made an open apology to Japanese gamers because he knew not everyone would get the system at launch.

Either way, the console is clearly doing swimmingly, and if we were to get more updates on its sales figures soon, we’d be able to tell how much it’s sold since those opening four days.
