Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube Controller Reportedly Only Works For GameCube Games

April 9, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

We’ll have to see for ourselves.

Nintendo is coming off a big week. Last week, most of us sat in to watch the Nintendo Direct. This was a big presentation that focused on the upcoming console, the Switch 2. There were plenty of big reveals and confirmations of past rumors or leaks. However, one area that might have some fans eager to try out is the GameCube classics lineup that will be available on the platform.

Like the previous Nintendo Switch, the upcoming Switch 2 console will also have access to past retro libraries. Depending on the tier you’re subscribed to with the platform, you have everything from original NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, and N64 games to just a few platforms. However, GameCube will be added exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 platform.

Like past releases, Nintendo is also set to release its retro take on the platform controller. So, not only will you get to play GameCube games, but you can also play the games with a controller designed around the original GameCube. Unfortunately, it looks like Nintendo is keeping this controller tied to just the GameCube library.

As reported by VGC, a small disclaimer for the GameCube controller noted that it only works for the GameCube game lineup. However, this isn’t new. Past controller releases for the various retro game library platforms had the same kind of disclaimer.

However, as pointed out by others, these controllers could also work on some games. It was a hit-or-miss setup, as the controllers might have lacked some of the button options to make the gameplay experience seamless. So, there’s a chance you might still get some use of the GameCube controller on Switch and Switch 2 games. We’ll just have to wait for the controller to be released and the console to see if it works for games outside the Nintendo Classics GameCube library.

That said, we know that the GameCube Classics library will feature three games at launch. Those games are The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Soulcalibur 2, and F-Zero GX. Of course, more games will slowly be added to the Nintendo Classics library over time.
