New Nintendo Switch Sales Record Revealed

February 20, 2025 by Todd Black

Can its successor follow it up?

With time counting down to the reveal of the Switch 2 gaming lineup, more pressure, for lack of a better word, is piling on the OG Nintendo Switch to deliver some great “final games” before the true transition to its successor goes down. We already know a Pokemon Presents will happen in one week to potentially reveal one of those last title’s release dates, but many are hoping something more will happen soon. Regardless, the Switch has already proven itself to be the console with the most incredible gaming lineup ever, and a new stat from an industry analyst has helped cement that further.

Paul Gale, video game media writer and analyst, revealed on his Twitter feed that the Nintendo Switch has had, as of the end of last year, 21 titles that sold over 10 million units. No other console comes close to that. In fact, to prove it, here’s the list of those that come after the Switch:

As of December 31st, 2024, Nintendo Switch has 21 games that have sold 10 million copies or more…the most ever for a console. Here is how others fare:

2) Xbox 360 – 11
3) Nintendo DS – 10
4) Wii – 9
5) PlayStation 4 – 9
6) Nintendo 3DS – 7
7) Game Boy – 6
8) PlayStation 2 – 5… pic.twitter.com/BJkiqPKixQ

There are some fascinating tidbits there that are easy to dissect, but we’ll start with the Switch. The fact that it’s gotten nearly double what the Xbox 360 had, the No.2 entry on the list, is impressive. Plus, if a certain title from The Pokemon Company sells as well as its predecessors, the Switch could have its 22nd ten-plus million-seller soon enough. It’s also really easy to point out the titles that have crossed the ten-million marker because of their prominence both on Switch and in the greater gaming industry. You can cite multiple ones with Mario, Link, the Inklings, a certain fighting game that became the highest-selling entry in its genre, a key racing title with Mario that is one of the best-selling games ever due to its Switch port, and so on.

In contrast, if you look at the bottom of that list, you’ll notice that the PS5 only has one entry that crossed the ten million mark, and the Xbox Series X/S isn’t even on the list at all! That speaks volumes about the gaming disparity between those two “next-gen systems” and the Switch, which was never as powerful as them yet had all the games that everyone really wanted to play.

Naturally, the question now turns to the Switch 2, which has to follow up on this impressive set of records that the OG Switch has done and see if it can surpass it. Nintendo knows it can’t screw this up, and the April 2nd Nintendo Direct will be a key window into what the Switch 2 is like at launch.
