Take-Two CEO Says Games Like GTA 6 Will Drive Console Sales This Year

February 10, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

Take-Two CEO also talks PC releases.

Quite a few games are coming out this year that we can’t wait to get our hands on. I’m sure you have a list of new games for 2025 that are day-one purchases. However, if you’re gaming on last-generation console platforms, some upcoming games, like GTA 6, might finally persuade you to jump to the latest generation. That’s what Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick is expecting.

Are you interested in picking up a new console this year? IGN recently reported that console sales are starting to plummet. That might mean most players interested in gaming have already made the jump. But that doesn’t mean there can’t be an influx of new console adopters this year. That’s especially true when considering some of the big AAA games coming our way.

One game that might have fans heading to their local retailer to pick up a new PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S platform is Grand Theft Auto VI. Speaking with Take-Two Interactive’s CEO Strauss Zelnick, the CEO noted that when big video games hit the marketplace, it has historically sold new consoles.

When you have a big title in the market and we have many of them coming, historically that has sold consoles. And I think that will happen this year. I don’t think tariffs are going to be our friend, but I think there will be a meaningful uptick in console sales in calendar 25 because of the release schedule, not just coming from us, but coming from others. So I’m not concerned about that [console sales falling]. I think the trend that you’d want to focus on is this increasing share of the market that is reflected in PC. – Strauss Zelnick

Still, one area that has continued to see an uptick in players is PC gaming. Years ago, PC gaming was more niche, with consoles taking the main focus for this industry. However, that’s starting to change, with more players sticking to custom or prebuilt gaming PCs to enjoy the latest installments. After all, both Microsoft and Sony provide their first-party games on the platform.

Unfortunately, if you’re strictly a PC gamer, you’re going to be left without Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar Games is only releasing GTA 6 on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 platforms this year. That’s typically been the case for Rockstar Games, as we don’t usually see a PC release until a year or so later. Perhaps we’ll see PC gamers even take the plunge and purchase a console just to enjoy this behemoth of a video game.

With regard to others in our lineup, we don’t always go across all platforms simultaneously. Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms. – Strauss Zelnick

For now, we are seeing more players enjoy GTA 5 as they wait for the next game. Meanwhile, even though GTA 6 will likely see some massive numbers at launch, it doesn’t mean Rockstar Games is not constantly looking over their shoulders at the competition.
