Switch 2 Was The Obvious Name Choice Even to Ex-PlayStation Execs.

February 3, 2025 by Andrew McKay

It makes sense to build on an existing brand and the recognition of that brand.

After great fanfare, leaks and rumours Nintendo finally revealed the Nintendo Switch 2. While media outlets and tech personalities had naturally begun referring to the Switch successor as the Nintendo Switch 2, many felt that it would have a new name. However, the Nintendo Switch has garnered so much attention that similarities in branding and building off of an established platform are clear choices, even to Ex-PlayStation executives.

As shared by the folks over at The Gamer. Shawn Layden a former head honcho at PlayStation weighed in on the naming of the Successor to the Nintendo Switch. This was as part of an interview with Kiwi Talkz. As reported by Nintendo Life Layden explained that by creating an immensely successful brand it is only natural that Nintendo might seek to capitalise on that.

“[Nintendo]created so much brand value in the word Switch, why would you mess with that?” ~ Shawn Lyden

This is not the first time Nintendo’s played this game either. The Gameboy is a prime example of that. The first iteration was only known as a “Gameboy” followed by the “Gameboy Color” and “Gameboy Advance”. Nintendo repeated this with the DS and the Wii. With varying success regarding the Wii.

That same approach has worked for Sony too. Sony has released iteration upon iteration of PlayStation without ever changing the name. At the end of the day, a casual gamer doesn’t know the ins and outs of tech. It’s beneficial that they’ll be able to easily distinguish between the various generations at a glance.

Some Nintendo fans might feel disappointed at the lack of ingenuity concerning the name of the Nintendo Switch 2 and even the console’s design. However, it only makes sense that Nintendo would try to take a more measured approach after achieving such immense success. The pre-order sign-ups for the Switch 2 have begun, click here to find out more.
