Former Rockstar Games Dev Wants Studio To Up Their Quality & Release Remasters

January 29, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

Could we see a quality GTA 4 remaster?

Many fans are eagerly awaiting the next fabled installment of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. GTA 6 is coming. We know it’s in the works, and despite only one trailer released a couple of years ago, it’s still slated to release this year. However, that doesn’t mean Rockstar Games wouldn’t find fans eating up remastered editions if they were of good quality.

The last remaster release from the developers was not something that most fans praised. I’m sure you all remember the release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy—The Definitive Edition. So when a mod was unveiled to bring Vice City to the GTA 4 game, it had a ton of attention. Fans were getting a big release with this game, and unfortunately, the IP owners struck it down.

However, as I’m sure you recall, modders went ahead with the project and ultimately released it as a standalone package. The same can’t be said for the Liberty City preservation project, which saw something similar. It would essentially bring a GTA 4 port to GTA 5. That was killed off, and it left fans frustrated, one of whom received a reply from Obbe Vermeij.

I agree. It would be better if R* did quality remasters of their classic games.

Obbe Vermeij was a developer who worked on several Rockstar games, including GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA 4. The developer responded to a fan who suggested that the Liberty City preservation project takedown was frustrating because it was what fans wanted from a remaster instead of what Rockstar Games offered fans with the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy—The Definitive Edition.

It seems Obbe agrees with fans and would love to see remastered editions of their classic games. However, he also agrees it would be better if the studio delivered some actual quality improvements.

While we don’t know if any moves are being made to officially remaster Grand Theft Auto IV, it’s likely not going to be a game we’ll receive anytime soon. Right now, the focus is likely strictly on the next major installment, Grand Theft Auto 6. That said, it’s nice knowing that even former developers from these games are also fond of fans receiving a solid remaster release rather than something subpar.
