Bungie Devs Reportedly Wanted To Make Smaller Single-Player Games

January 21, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

Studio leadership supposedly refused.

Bungie might have had some big success with Destiny, but some developers within the company wanted to dial things back to a more single-player gameplay experience. Instead, a new report has suggested that the company’s leadership was not fond of the resources spent on these projects, even if they were smaller in scope.

The developers at Bungie have been working on Destiny 2 and Marathon. These multiplayer and live-service projects might help keep Sony’s dream of having some stable footing with live-service gaming. But since Destiny 2 dropped into the marketplace, it’s not basking in as much limelight. We’ve been reporting on Bungie’s struggles since last year. For instance, we reported on Sony’s interim CEO wanting to see improvements in the studio, the loss of players on Destiny 2 and how the studio lost quite a few employees.

At any rate, what you might find interesting is that there were actually some developers reportedly keen on the studio diverting attention to single-player projects. This news comes from Zuhaad Ali, the owner of Destiny Bulletn. With a focus on Destiny, Zuhaad learned of the interest in returning to single-player games during a story he worked on last year.

Something I heard when I was working on a story last year: A lot of Bungie devs were interested in returning to single-player projects, but leadership was firmly set on live service as the studio’s future.

Even smaller, less risky projects/ideas would get immediately shut down.

Taking to X, Zuhaad only noted that some developers wanted to bring out single-player projects even if they were smaller or less risky ideas for the studio to also work on. However, it was reported that leadership within the company would shut down the ideas brought up.

That’s frustrating to hear, especially if you were fond of Bungie’s time with the Halo franchise. If this report proves accurate, I’m sure Sony would have been keen on a single-player project being worked on.

Recently, Sony just killed off some live service titles. These cancellations were reportedly due to fears of another poor release like the infamous Concord launch last year. We’ll have to wait and see if Bungie sees much success with their upcoming Marathon game or if they eventually return to more single-player experiences.
