Sega Considering Its Own Subscription Service

December 23, 2024 by Dennis Patrick

Could Sega compete against rival game subscription services?

Gaming has continued to evolve in big ways over the years. While it has become more impressive in terms of fidelity and performance, it has also become more accessible. We’re seeing more subscription services pop up, much like other entertainment media. With services like Xbox Game Pass, players not only have the means to enjoy a wide catalog of games that grows monthly, but they can also enjoy these games through cloud streaming. Now, it looks like Sega could be keen on delivering its own service.

BBC had the chance to speak with Shuji Utsumi, the CEO of Sega America and Europe. During the conversation, Shuji Utsumi spoke about how Sega views subscription products as very interesting. They were also discussing something in that regard, but they couldn’t disclose anything right now. So it seems like there could be another subscription service on the horizon, much like how we have EA and Ubisoft, but that also leaves some wondering if this is the right move.

While there will be Sega fans who quickly add this to their monthly subscription service, others might find it hard to justify the price for another subscription service just to have access to Sega IPs. This might also mean we will see Sega no longer providing its games to services like Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus.

Regardless, it looks like Sega is only discussing the idea right now, so we’ll have to wait and see if anything else comes from it. Of course, this wasn’t the only news from Sega today. It was also reported earlier that Sega is not interested in bringing another mini console into the marketplace. Instead, the focus would be on delivering more titles for modern gamers.
