Sega Is Not Releasing Another Mini Console

December 23, 2024 by Dennis Patrick

They are aimed at modern gamers.

Sega was a big competitor name for years. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that. But over the years, they have left the console business behind. That was until they released their mini console. It was a bit of a trend for several companies. We saw mini console releases filled with roms from the console’s cherished legacy catalogs. However, don’t hold your breath if you were hopeful that we might see another Sega mini console.

There are a few consoles that I’m sure fans wouldn’t mind seeing come out in the plug-and-play mini form. With Sega, there are consoles such as the Saturn and Dreamcast, two of which The Guardian brought up to Shuji Utsumi. Shuji is the CEO of Sega America and Europe. While speaking with the publication, the topic of mini consoles came up. It was asked whether we might see another mini-release from the company, but that’s ultimately something Sega seems to be shooting down right now.

Shuji noted that they don’t want to go in the mini direction, and the focus is on modern gamers. While they embrace and appreciate their legacy, it’s noted that Sega is not a retro company. Instead, they want to deliver something new rather than become history.

I’m not going for the Mini direction. It’s not me. I want to embrace modern gamers. We are not a retro company. We really appreciate our legacy, we value it, but at the same time, we want to deliver something new – otherwise we’ll become history. That’s not what we’re aiming for. – Shuji Utsumi

Of course, we can understand that, but it doesn’t look like Sega has left those IPs in the past. We know that several of those classic IPs are getting a new lease on life. Hopefully, with the new installments, we’re not only getting a solid experience for veteran fans but also finding that Sega is gaining some footing with newcomers as well. Regardless, for those of you who want to add another mini console to your collection, it looks like you can avert your attention away from Sega for the time being.
