Update:
CD Projekt Red has since confirmed Geralt will return for the next game.
Original Story…
CD Projekt Red is getting a ton of attention right now, thanks to their latest trailer drop from yesterday. I’m sure you’ve already seen the headlines and watched the trailer a few times now. But if by chance it evaded you, The Witcher 4 was again showcased to the masses. This was our first real look into the game, and we know that the leading protagonist won’t be Geralt. However, fans of the protagonist from the past game installments likely don’t have to worry about Geralt meeting an untimely fate.
We won’t get a breakdown of what to expect for The Witcher 4. After all, we just received its first significant trailer. But that trailer release did leave fans with a ton of questions. One of which is just what happens to Geralt. We know that we left Geralt in a good place after the events of The Witcher 3 wrapped. However, as the trailer is played, we know that the leading protagonist is Ciri. Fortunately, we got a little tease of the mindset from the developers at CD Projekt Red when it comes to their previous leading man.
IGN spoke with franchise and lore designers Cian Maher and Marcin Batylda from the studio. During their conversation, the publication asked if Geralt would make an appearance in The Witcher 4. But don’t expect a direct answer.
Instead, Cian noted that Geralt will probably be around long. They would instead reference one of the prequel novels, Season of Storms. It was noted that in that novel, an epilogue takes place 101 years after the events of The Witcher 3. While it doesn’t directly note what Witcher was hunting a monster in the Magpie Forest, most would safely assume that this was Geralt. As a result, you don’t have to count out Geralt making an appearance in the game.
Of course, Geralt’s voice actor landed in hot water after noting that the character would appear in the game. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see if Geralt returns in some capacity or if we see him show up in a new trailer marketing the game.
