Avowed Devs Worked To Ensure Companions Didn’t Become Backseat Drivers

December 9, 2024 by Dennis Patrick

Carrie Patel opens up about Avowed companions.

Avowed is the next big release from the talented folks at Obsidian Entertainment. The studio is gearing up to release this game early next year. But before it drops, we have some new information about the companions you’ll go through this grand adventure with. Here’s what the game director, Carrie Patel, recently unveiled.

During a conversation with GamesRadar, Carrie spoke about having companions feel more balanced. Crafting a grand RPG while still ensuring that all the characters feel like they are naturally going through this journey can be tough. So, that was one of the big areas Obsidian Entertainment honed in on when it came to creating these companions. It’s said that players will be able to hear companions talk amongst each other about the adventure they are on or even with the protagonists themselves. But they also noted this is going to more player opt-in conversations, so depending on how much time you spend with your companions might determine how much you’ll hear these conversations.

Beyond that, the studio also wanted to cover another key area. In addition to making the companions feel a little more present in the action, they wanted to ensure they didn’t become backseat drivers. They didn’t want players to feel like their companions second-guessed their choices. That might make it a little easier to dive into the more evil or chaotic choices without too much pushback from your crew.

Regardless, it will be a waiting game to see how well the companions are handled in Avowed. We don’t have to wait too long to get a copy of the game. At the moment, the title is set to launch on February 18, 2025. You’ll find the game available on the PC and Xbox Series X/S platforms when it is released. Unfortunately, we don’t know whether this game will be released on the PlayStation 5 platform later or if it remains a Microsoft exclusive.
