Mario and Luigi: Brothership Has The Largest Gap Between Ranking and Release Since FE Engage

November 18, 2024 by Andrew McKay

It’s not the longest time but it’s up there

Mario and Luigi: Brothership has burst onto the scene, recently released, it’s almost impossible for a Nintendo fan to open a device and not see some article related to it. Amid mostly positive reviews, the game hasn’t been without its critics. The earliest of those were almost 301 days before release.

Pierre485 over on Bluesky pointed out that Mario and Luigi: Brothership had the largest gap between rating and release date of any recent first party Nintendo game. The last game to have ranked higher in this regard was FE Egage, which was rated 515 days before release.

Some interesting data from recently released Nintendo titles (USK) : • Mario & Luigi: Brothership was rated 301 days before release, the longest for an original Nintendo title since FE Engage (which was rated 515 days before release)*USK is the German rating board

This is another game in the series of turn-based RPGs Nintendo has recently been reviving/releasing. It brings with it some wonderfully catchy music, fun mechanics, new and old characters and interesting battle mechanics. However it is still a big Nintendo game. As such, it suffers from some of the same issues that other recent releases suffer from. Games like The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and Tears of the Kingdom and yes, Mario and Luigi: Brothership all suffer from unstable frame rates and pacing issues.

None of that seemed to stop the USK from rating the game 301 days before it was released. The interesting question might be, what state was this game in when it was rated and who can we ask. This is only an interesting bit of data that offers us a peak behind the development/ release cycle curtain. If you’d like to read more about Mario and Luigi: Brothership click here.
