Sonic x Shadow Generations Gets Solid Metacritic Score

October 21, 2024 by Todd Black

Two Sonics, A Shadow And A Good Review Score!

It’s always tricky when you try to remaster a game from a while back. If you just do a “bare bones” approach, then you risk no one buying it, or calling you out for doing a “cash grab.” Or, if you do too much, you could completely change what the game was like before, which many might not like. With Sonic x Shadow Generations, they decided to do a bit of a balancing act between the old and the new. They took the iconic crossover title featuring two different versions of Sonic The Hedgehog and then threw in some all-new content featuring Shadow The Hedgehog that showed a different version of events involving his origin.

The game is set to drop a little later this week, and on Metacritic, reviewers have already revealed what they thought of the game. The game currently has a score of “80,” with about 50 reviewers weighing in. That number could shift depending on how many other people send in a review, but either way, that’s a solid number for this remaster. However, what exactly are they saying about the game?

Many consistently state that this is basically “two games in one,” especially thanks to the Shadow content, which is emphatically new in both story and gameplay mechanics. To that end, others have noted that it’s a “must-have” for franchise fans, which is always good praise to hear.

Plenty of praise was heaped upon Sega itself, with plenty of it being given for the Shadow levels, which they compare to more recent games due to their size and presentation. Speaking of presentation, the title’s graphics were also praised, definitively making this the “best-looking version” of the title.

As for the negatives, some noted that while the Shadow content was fun, it wasn’t that long. That hurts, especially when you hear various comments about how the main game is fun, but it still has certain issues from the initial release, including the imbalance in the fun department. Take this in stride, though, and get the game if you feel it’s worth your time!

Another thing that makes Sonic x Shadow Generations so interesting is that it’ll drop some DLC later this year that’ll tie the title into the upcoming movie. The third movie in the live-action adaptation line will see Keanu Reeves voice Shadow the Hedgehog, which many are excited about. To that end, the DLC will feature the movie version of Shadow, with Keanu Reeves doing the voice. So, yeah, that’s a big deal.
