PS5 Pro Trailer Analysis Finds Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed Shadows Running At 864p 60 FPS

September 16, 2024 by Ryan Parreno

This is only a trailer analysis because DF didn’t get to test the console.

Digital Foundry has gotten ahead with an analysis of the PlayStation 5 Pro’s performance, based on the announcement video.

This information was not initially shared to the public. Instead, they shared this as part of a subscriber only post on their Patreon. Subsequently, several of their subscribers have shared this information.

While we aren’t subscribed to Digital Foundry’s Patreon ourselves, several subscribers are sharing this information separately. We can cite Twitter user JMaine518 and redditor MXHombre123 as our sources on this information.

It’s unfortunate that this information leaked outside of their Patreon, but much like the Rhysida ransomware hack of Insomniac Games, the information has now gone public, and actively being talked about by the community. You can subscribe to Digital Foundry’s Patreon here.

What follows are the Digital Foundry’s notes verbatim:

“The Last of Part 2 – 1440p internal resolution at 60fps in this PS5 Pro Mode (same as PS5 Performance Mode) with improved image quality due to PSSR

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart – Between 1440p and 1800p internal resolution (roughly the PS5 Quality Mode at 40fps) at 60fps in this PS5 Pro mode with the same settings as the PS5 Performance Mode and using PSSR to bring it up to 4K

DLSS > PSSR > FSR

Alan Wake 2 – Two modes shown (864p at 60fps & 1260p at 30fps) which is the same as the base PS5 modes and they presume it’s using PSSR and not the FSR in base PS5. 60fps clip has SSR but the 30fps clip could have RT.

Horizon Forbidden West – resolution didn’t look 4K. They presume it’s not using PSSR but hard to tell. Thinking it is using 4K checkerboard but again hard to tell. PS5 vs PS5 Pro has the Pro with higher detail.

Hogwarts Legacy – RT reflections looks better on the PS5 Pro but has some visual noise in the background. RT shadows might be mixed with SSR but look to be an improvement over base PS5. 30 fps in the footage but the presume it’ll have 60fps modes as the base PS5 has it.

Gram Turismo 7 – RT reflections in game appear to be quarter resolution (1080p). 8k mode. Lower resolution (1188p) in the PS5 Pro footage and probably using PSSR to bring it up to 4K where the base game without RT reflections is a Native 4K. RT looks better than Forza Motorsport.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 / Assassins Creed Shadows – DG2 looks to be running at 60fps and might be using PSSR. ACS looks to be running at 864p at 60fps”

As you may see, they found that several games do not seem to output at a resolution of 4K, if they are running in 60 FPS. Because Digital Foundry was not given access to a PlayStation 5 Pro unit prior to this announcement, this analysis is really only preliminary. It is also possible that this trailer was made weeks or months before, and Sony believes that the console will have better performance when it launches this November.

We also have to point out that Tom Warren of the Verge claimed that some PlayStation 5 Pro games will still be running in 30 FPS. Digital Foundry also already claimed they don’t expect Grand Theft Auto 6 to run 4K at 60 FPS on the console either. So PlayStation 5 Pro owners may have to set their expectations that this upgraded console will not be able to deliver on those long sought after metrics.
