Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Has Gone Gold

July 10, 2024 by Ryan Parreno

It’s really a miracle in itself that this game survived both the pandemic lockdown and Embracer.

Publisher Focus Entertainment has revealed that Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has gone gold.

They shared this message on their official Twitter account:

“#SpaceMarine2 has gone GOLD!

Your eternal service starts on September 9.”

This gives them a comfortable two months ahead of the game’s official release. And of course, developer Saber Interactive may have already hit gold status days or even weeks before this announcement.

This will make Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Saber’s first major title to release after they spun off away from Embracer Group to become their own studio. Surprisingly, that separation was amicable from both parties. But that likely reflected favorable business conditions, as Saber found a financial backer willing to take them on, not something that other game studios were lucky enough to do.

Saber announced this game all the way back in The Game Awards 2021, and it became an odd tradition that Saber would bring a new trailer for the game in the following two years after. But Saber can be proud of the fact that they were able to produce this game through both the lockdown/quarantine years of this pandemic, as well as surviving Saber’s separation of Embracer, and they are actually going to get it through the finish line. It’s a rare happy ending in these past two years, while the industry continues to go through a wave of layoffs and studio closures.

Early this month, Saber cancelled plans for an open beta. They claimed that they made this choice to focus on polishing the game and getting it ready for release. Basically, their plan did work, and now we know that the game is being prepared for publishing.

But this does come with an obvious issue. We don’t know for sure if Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2‘s online multiplayer modes will be in the best of shape in time for launch. It can be argued that with the nature of online multiplayer, that is something that Saber can fix after launch. From that point of view, Saber valued the core single player experience first, and they expect fans will be happy with these choices as that was their priority, too.

This game may be a sequel, but with 13 years passing since the first Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, it will have been a long time coming. We’re sure fans are looking forward to playing through the next chapter in Captain Titus’ epic, grimdark, fantastic journey.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 will be releasing on September 9, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows via Steam.
