Larian Is Moving On From Baldur’s Gate As A Whole, To A New Project

March 22, 2024 by Ryan Parreno

Sometimes a clean break is what you need.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke has shut down all speculation about any Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC or sequels.

As reported by PC Gamer, Swen spoke at length on this year’s GDC, about why Larian isn’t interested in making Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC, and their disinterest in making more content in that universe in general. Swen said:

“We are a company of big ideas. We are not a company that’s made to create DLCs or expansions. We tried that actually, a few times. It failed every single time. It’s not our thing. Life is too short. Our ambitions are very large.

And so like Gustav, Baldur’s Gate will always have a warm spot in our heart. We’ll forever be proud of it but we’re not going to continue in it.

We’re not going to make new expansions which everybody is expecting. We’re not going to make Baldur’s Gate 4 which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re going to move on. We’re going to move away from D&D and we’re going to start making a new thing.”

As we ourselves reported, Swen teased starting work on their next project last January. Given how long they took to make Baldur’s Gate 3, this next title might take a while to come out.

Larian of course, have continued to get requests for Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC, as we reported even as recently as yesterday. But we already know why more DLC is not happening months ago: Larian followed the Dungeons & Dragons rulebook to a tee when they made this game, and they planned out maxing out how powerful each character is going to be throughout the course of the game.

In other words, Larian planned for every idea they had to make it to the final game thatis Baldur’s Gate 3. And given that Larian put this title on two years’ worth of Early Access, they likely got as much testing out of it as they needed. After all, Baldur’s Gate 3 just so happens to be a multiple time GOTY award winner.

We should not be worried about Baldur’s Gate 3 anyway. As we had also reported yesterday, Hasbro revealed that they are getting into the video game business themselves. Not only are they starting new video games with their IPs, but they are building new video game studios for the same purpose. It’s almost certainly a given that Baldur’s Gate 4 is part of their plans.
